Detailed Udemy Review and Tips. Is Udemy Legit?

I realized that, despite listing thousands of free and low-cost Udemy courses on the site, I’ve never actually written a full Udemy review. It occurred to me that while many of you may be sold on the idea of acquiring new skills for as little as $10 per course, you might not yet be sure about Udemy itself.

I decided to remedy that with this article. Here’s my full Udemy review.

What Is Udemy?

Udemy is an online-learning mega site which offers courses on almost every subject you can think of. From computer programming to martial arts to Thai cooking, Udemy instructors have reached over 30 million students to date, and they’ve passed on all sorts of skills and knowledge.

The thing which makes Udemy unique is that it doesn’t promote courses by academic institutions such as Harvard or MIT. Instead, everyday people with skills teach other ordinary people via video courses. Anyone can become an Udemy instructor – including you!

For this Udemy review to be complete on Mumcoupon, I’ll cover both angles – from the buyer’s point of view, and the perspective of a potential Udemy course seller.

Is Udemy Accredited?

No. Udemy does not offer courses by accredited institutions. Some other online learning websites like edX do. If accreditation is important to you, for example, because you want to take a course to move up the career ladder, you might want to consider some Udemy alternatives. You’ll find them listed at the bottom of this article.

Is Udemy Legit?

Online learning sites don’t get much more legit than Udemy. While there are others out there, this is the uncrowned king of e-learning. It has been mentioned in prestigious publications like Entrepreneur.com. They even go as far as recommending several of the top Udemy courses.

Of course, there’s a flip side to the fact that anyone can create an Udemy course. It means that anyone, regardless of qualifications, can create a course, upload it, and start acquiring students. This means that while the best Udemy courses are world-class, others leave a lot to be desired.

After browsing through thousands of courses, I can tell you that truly talented individuals create the majority of them. For example, Jonas Schmedtmann’s HTML 5 and CCS3 course has over 28,000 reviews at an average of 4.6 stars. That many people can’t be wrong.

In summary, Udemy is legit. Not everyone on the platform is legit, but the platform itself is, and that’s what’s important.

Is Udemy Worth It for Learning?

If I didn’t believe it was, I wouldn’t have built a website offering tens of thousands of Udemy coupons. I believe that Udemy is worth it. Here’s why:

  • Udemy Is Cost-Effective – You’ll find some premium courses, but they rarely cost more than $20. There are also lots of free Udemy courses if you want to dip your toes in the e-learning waters without making a financial commitment so it’s possible to study many Udemy courses completely free.
  • It’s Open to Everyone – It doesn’t matter where you’re from in the world – there are Udemy courses for you. You’ll be able to find courses in many different languages, too. As long as you have an internet connection, Udemy is open to you.
  • Udemy Courses Are User-Rated – Udemy students can rate courses after taking them. This makes it easy to find legit Udemy courses and discard the not-so-great ones. All courses have a star-rating generated by students. Many of them also come with a money-back guarantee.

The only downside is the answer to “Are Udemy courses valid certificates?” This takes us back to the point made above – they’re not accredited. However, don’t dismiss them for that reason – many employers are embracing e-learning and self-taught skills as a generational shift occurs in the workplace. Adios, boomers, and hello millennials!

Real Examples of Udemy Courses

There are so many great Udemy courses that it’s challenging to narrow it down to a handful to give as examples. However, I said I’d give you examples, so here are three of the best Udemy courses.

  • Copywriting Secrets – How to Write Copy that Sells has three hours of on-demand video, two articles, and 44 downloadable resources. Over 33,000 students have taken it, and it’s a top-rated Udemy course.
  • Sounds True Presents: The Yoga of Awakening has 14 hours of on-demand video and one article. This course deals with energetic and emotional healing. This is the sort of interesting course you can take on Udemy. Over 8,000 students have taken this course, and it has an average rating of 4.8 stars.
  • Beginning C++ Programming – From Beginner to Beyond is an introduction to C++ object-oriented programming. It has 39.5 hours of on-demand video, three articles, and 37 downloadable resources. Almost 50,000 students have taken this course, and it has a 4.5-star rating.

As you can see, Udemy offers an eclectic mix of courses and skills. There are courses for freelancers, students, stay-at-home moms, and just about anyone curious and driven enough to learn.

Selling Courses on Udemy – Is It Worth It?

So far, we’ve covered Udemy for students. But what about teachers? Is Udemy worth it for selling courses? I think so, but you’ll have to make your mind up. Here are the facts.

  • Generally, Udemy splits course fees 50/50 with creators. There are some variables to consider, but you can take the 50-50 split as a general rule of thumb.
  • Udemy is highly scalable. You can reach millions of potential students. Some instructors make six-figures with Udemy courses. Even if you don’t achieve those lofty heights, imagine getting 1,000 students per year on a $20 course with a 50% revenue split. That’s $10,000 per year in your pocket for a one-time effort. You may have to make the odd update as your space changes, but it’s relatively passive income.
  • Udemy takes care of the payment processing and business side of things. You can just plug-and-play and hope your course is received well in the free market of e-learning. On Udemy, the cream rises to the top, so if you make a reasonable effort, you’ll likely have success.

I’m not trying to pull the wool over your eyes – Udemy is fiercely competitive. Lots of people know about it, and you’ll have to be a true master of your niche to have six-figure success. However, like website content (Mumcoupon) or anything else in life, you have to do it better than your competitors.

You aren’t going to let a little competition kill your passive income dreams, are you?

Udemy Review: Final Thoughts

As a student, Udemy will give back in proportion to the effort you make. Make no mistake about it – there are top-level gurus in their fields offering courses on Udemy, but you still have to make an effort to study and succeed. The learning won’t happen by osmosis.

That goes for teachers and instructors, too. You can’t just publish a half-baked course and expect millions to roll in overnight. You’ll have to create something truly outstanding to beat the excellent courses already available on Udemy.

So – is Udemy worth it? Yes: if you are worth it as a student or an instructor.

Udemy Alternatives

If you’d like to explore some Udemy alternatives before making up your mind, here are the best options:

  • Linkedin Learning – You may know Linkedin as a digital professional networking website, but did you know that it recently bought Lynda? As a result, Linkedin can now offer thousands of excellent e-learning courses. You can subscribe, or you can buy one-time-payment courses. There’s also a free trial period.
  • edX – This is your best option if you want to take accredited e-learning courses. Heavy hitters like Berkeley and Harvard have options here. Some of them are even free.
  • Coursera – You can earn professional certifications accredited by top universities and colleges on this e-learning site. If you’re a career-oriented person, it’s well worth checking out.
